Samir,

I started using DORIS (from Applied Systems) back in 2001 and upgraded to TAM (The Agency Manager) Online (also from Applied Systems) in 2007. If your starting out DORIS will do most of what you need. It will allow you to be practically paperless if you have a scanner and upload the files to the online server. It allows download from the insurer to your database for new policies. We used it for personal lines and small commercial lines. I would not recommend it for life and health, large commercial or any applications where you expect to be scanning and uploading huge amounts of paper unless your going to get a very high-speed, self-feeding, double-side scanner.

Both of the systems are very good at what they're designed to do. Some things they're not designed to do, such as creating, implementing and reviewing a business plan. You will find yourself working outside the system for things like that.

Neither one is a true paperless system that will allow you to export data into a format of your choosing such as Adobe, modify it, and save it back to a file without ever using a paper copy. (For example, an existing homeowners insurance customer wants an auto policy. You could create a new policy, open a new acord auto application and key in the data needed, but it's much more realistic to complete a paper questionnaire and then scan it into the system.)

Hope this helps.

Hi Samir,
that's very good question for "Insurance Technology & Software" :)
I could recommend you several good and proven solution from Polish market. We have some pretty interesting insurance systems for desktop and web. I think that your focus on "complete paperless envirnoment utilizing the web for almost all activities" is very good direction.

If you are looking for a great system that is very reasonable try AgencyIQ. We are not a client management system (even though a lot of agents do use it that way but we don't track financials or take downloads from your companies) but we are easier to use than a lot of the thicker systems and we are much more "plug and play" with document management abilities. Check it out and I'd love your feedback on the system! www.agencyiq.net

Samir, what is your vision of what your new agency will look like in one year from now? Five years from now? Will you be mostly commercial lines, personal lines? Will you have more than one location, operate in more than one state? Allow staff to telecommute from home? Be a "sales-oriented" or a "service-oriented" agency? Think about all these things, as they will influence what you find to be the "right" system for your new agency. Get demos, and referrals from every system that demos for you, and use an objective process to 1) define what you want and 2) score each system against that spec. Almost all small agency management systems do the same things, they just look differently when they do them. In the end, there are no "better" systems; only better processes to choose one, and better technology managers and users once the buy decision is made.

Samir,

I recommend you check out http://www.TomorrowIsHere.com. If you're looking for a system which is going to revolutionize the way insurance agents do business, you will find it there. The software is called Aspire insurance agency management system and its by Impowersoft. I am certain it will exceed all of your expectations. It is 100% web-based, will greatly increase productivity in your office, automates a variety of marketing methods (including a Facebook integration), and includes SMS/text message communication with your clients. Good luck with your decision.

Have you or any one out there been running this program. I am looking at taking my current book and going out alone and I have this program, quickfile and easyApps as my top three picks for agency software. I can not find any reviews an the Aspire product and they have not responded to my online quote request after several days.

Hi Samir:
I have used both Doris and Quickfile in my Independent agency here in Florida. I started with Quickfile and switched to Doris after a few years as Doris offerred stronger accounting features. In a very short time Quickfile added several Accounting features which brought them up to speed. I left Doris after about a year and went back to Quickfile for several reasons.
1) Quickfile was robust and easier to use.
2) Support is top notch
3) Software is constantly being updated.
4) Cost of Quicjfile is much lower than Doris.
I am veru happy with Quickfile and from a strength and cost perspective they are hard to beat.
Hope this helps.

I have used several programs as well including Goldmine and GBS AgencyExpert. I'm now using Maximizer. I like Maximizer and it's very customizable. The problem is that it uses MS Outlook as its email client and I can't stand it. I'm now exploring several programs.

I'm reluctant to buy an insurance industry software program rather than a more universal program. Maybe I'll be less reluctant if the insurance program uses a platform that makes it easy to convert your data if you choose to switch to another program down the road. We like to think that our agency software will live happily ever after in our office. But experience tells me that it's highly likely that there'll be reason to change one day.
